It’s been said that Mick expressed a wish to produce America’s teen idol David Cassidy (also known as Keith from the television series The Partridge Family) before he became involved with the Rolling Thunder Revue. David, in an attempt to shed his teen image after quitting the television show, had signed a three record contract with RCA making him a label mate with Mick.

David recorded Gettin’ It In The Street, his third RCA album at Caribou Ranch Studios in Denver. Cassidy invited a variety of musicians to the sessions and had shown great interest in collaborating with Mick. A meeting at the ranch during the Rolling Thunder Tour of May 1976 finally provided them with this opportunity. David told writer Chris Charlesworth how, “Mick came up to the studios and played on a couple of tracks on the album (only one is known to exist) and he helped me a lot.” Mick and David also discussed the possibilities of collaborating more in the near future.

Later, when Cassidy and his drummer, Ricky Fataar, passed through New York, Mick booked the studio time and the team spent a few weeks rehearsing at Studio Instrumental Rental (SIR). There was talk of Mick producing David’s new album and allegedly a joint venture was mooted as a possibility, although both these ideas failed to evolve. Rumours of a tour were also on the New York grapevine, but these rehearsals turned out to be the full extent of their work together after those initial studio sessions in Denver. Incidentally, Gettin’ It In The Street was initially only issued in Germany and Japan (November 1976) and didn’t get released in America until years later, in 1979. The title track, often described as a “gritty” little rocker, features Mick on guitar and fared very well on the German charts, peaking at #12 in April, 1977.
